Kissimmee Local History
Originally a small trading post on the northern bank of Lake Tohopekaliga in the 1800's, it was included in a purchase of 4 million acres by Mr. Hamilton Disston, after the Civil War. In 1881 he contracted to drain the area and deepen the Kissimmee river, so products could be shipped to the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. From the late 1800's into the turn of the century, the economy of the area relied on cattle farming and sugar cane.
With the land boom in the 1920's, the population increased and again in 1940 with the construction of the airport, in preparation for America's entry into the Second World War. The population increased again with the opening of the Walt Disney World Resort and today over 40 000 people live in Kissimmee.
